December 2019: a dark book series, RVA pie shop, lots of cards & crafting, and a little fitness

Goal Summary for December 2019

December always seems to be a busy month (but aren’t they all?). We went to see Hamilton at the beginning of the month. It was face paced, witty, and spectacularly executed. I just got back from visiting family and have been eating all the Christmas cookies. I managed to accomplish all of my goals in December 2019 with the help of some extra time off around Christmas.


Stephanie from She Saw Style recommended Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. And, y’all, she found a good one! On an imaginary island triplet sisters are born every generation to the queen. The girls must fight to the death once they turn 16 in order to decide who becomes the next queen. Despite the premise, I didn’t find it to be overly dark, and the drama intrigued me. I added this book to my list of top books of 2019 before I even finished it. It’s that good. I read the second in the series, One Dark Throne, after. I don’t want to spoil anything, so let’s just say the plot thickens and I will be continuing the series.


After Hamilton we headed to Proper Pie Co. for dinner.


It was so freakin tasty we went back later in the month for more. I’m talking ‘can’t even talk because that would require you to stop eating’ tasty.

The lemon meringue pie was the best I’ve ever had. Meringue around 4 inches tall over lemon curd? Count me in. As far as savory pies go, the mince & cheese was addicting and the gravy in the pork gumbo is what dreams are made of. Oh yeah and the sausage roll too. Get that. From what I can tell there are no bad options here. There are even vegetarian and vegan options.


I didn’t get my act together in November to finish the last round of Christmas cards. So there was those. Right before Christmas, I made my mom a couple of cotton dish cloths, but forgot to take a picture before I wrapped them. I also made a family friend a small rooster print by stamping the rooster then painting it in with water colors. During my time off, I knocked out some birthday cards to replenish my very low stash. It was quite the crafting month!


My goal this month was strength training of some kind twice a week. I’m happy to say I met my goal! While I didn’t do any big workouts, I did manage to do something in December. With the business of the holidays, that’s a win in my book. Lots of a few set of this here and a few sets of that there.
